PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) stands out for its exceptional chemical resistance, electrical insulating properties, and thermal stability, unmatched by other plastics. With an operating range from -200 °C to +260 °C, PTFE is suitable for both extreme cold and high temperatures. Its semi-crystalline, rubber-like soft structure makes it flexible and durable – ideal for seals, sliding bearings, sealing profiles, and numerous industrial applications.

The properties of PTFE can be specifically tailored by compounding with fillers:

  • Wear resistance: Increases by 200 to 1000 times compared to pure PTFE.
  • Compressive strength and thermal conductivity: Can be optimized depending on the application requirements.
  • Anti-adhesive behavior: Mostly retained, though slightly reduced at high filler content.
  • Chemical resistance: Depends on the type of filler used.
  • Coloring: Special pigments allow coloring for identification or specific applications.
  • Physiological behavior:

    • PTFE is physiologically stable at room temperature and is almost non-flammable.
    • Material properties are not affected by contact with aggressive media.
    • Vapors are only released above +360 °C, which can be relevant for health.
  • Sliding behavior:

    • Very low coefficient of friction – identical behavior under static and dynamic friction.
    • Transition from rest to motion occurs smoothly.
    • No stick-slip effect due to extremely low intermolecular forces.
  • Wear behavior:

    • Pure white PTFE is only surpassed in abrasion resistance by a few materials.
    • Particles sinter together during processing, so no true melt occurs.
    • Behavior can be specifically tailored with fillers depending on the application.
